Recalls, prices and rules for US car owners.

Who Owns Which Car Brands: Parent Companies of US-Sold Makes

Most cars sold in the US come from about 15 parent companies. General Motors owns Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac; Ford owns Ford and Lincoln; Stellantis owns Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Maserati; Toyota owns Lexus; Honda owns Acura; Nissan owns Infiniti; and Hyundai Motor Group includes Kia and Genesis. Volvo is controlled by China’s Geely, and Jaguar Land Rover by India’s Tata Motors.

Ownership tells you who backs the warranty and parts supply. It does not tell you where a car was built; for that, see our guide on where your car was built.

Which company owns each car brand?

The table lists parent companies and the brands they sell in the US as of November 2026, from company investor and brand pages. Headquarters country is in brackets.

Independent brands sold in the US include Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, Ferrari and Aston Martin. Some have large outside shareholders; Lucid’s largest shareholder is Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, for example.

Who owns Jeep, Ram and Dodge?

Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Chrysler belong to Stellantis, which was formed in 2021 by the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and France’s PSA Group. Stellantis is registered in the Netherlands and also owns Peugeot, Citroen, Opel, Vauxhall, Lancia, Abarth and DS, which are not sold in the US.

Stellantis lists 14 brands on its brands page. Its US operations, formerly Chrysler, remain headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

Who owns Volvo, Polestar and Lotus?

Volvo Cars, Polestar and Lotus are controlled by Zhejiang Geely Holding of China. Geely bought Volvo Cars from Ford in 2010. Volvo Cars and Polestar are separately listed companies, and Volvo builds vehicles in South Carolina.

Volvo trucks are a different company. AB Volvo, which makes Volvo and Mack trucks, has been separate from Volvo Cars since 1999.

Are Kia and Hyundai the same company?

Kia and Hyundai are separate companies in the same group. Hyundai Motor Company is Kia’s largest shareholder, and the two share platforms, engines and much engineering while running separate dealer networks. Genesis is Hyundai’s luxury brand.

Shared engineering means shared problems at times. Recalls and investigations can cover related Hyundai and Kia models together, so check each VIN separately at nhtsa.gov.

Which brands share partnerships or joint ventures?

Automakers often share plants, platforms or battery factories without merging. Common examples in the US:

  • Toyota and Mazda jointly own an assembly plant in Huntsville, Alabama.
  • Toyota and Subaru co-develop vehicles; Toyota holds about a fifth of Subaru’s shares.
  • GM and LG Energy Solution run battery cell plants as Ultium Cells.
  • Ford and SK On split their BlueOval SK battery venture in 2026: Ford took the Kentucky plants and SK On the Tennessee plant.
  • Volkswagen Group and Rivian formed a joint venture for vehicle software and electrical architecture.

Honda and Nissan held merger talks in late 2024 but called them off in February 2025. Joint ventures can end or change quickly, so treat this list as a snapshot.

What happens to my car if its parent company sells a brand?

A sale of a brand does not cancel your warranty, but who honors it can change. Warranties are obligations of the company that issued them, and buyers of a brand usually take on its warranty and recall duties as part of the deal.

Dealer franchises, parts supply and software support are the practical concerns, especially for small brands. Our guide to what happens if an automaker goes bankrupt covers warranties and recalls in a failure.

Bottom line

A handful of global groups own nearly every brand in a US showroom, and many brands share engines, platforms and plants with siblings. When you research a model, check recalls and reliability data for its corporate cousins too.
