Toyota will fit a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port to every 2027 RAV4 plug-in hybrid, giving the small SUV DC fast charging for the first time, the company said Nov. 5 from its Plano, Texas, headquarters. The plug-in models start at $42,100 for the SE grade, while the regular hybrid starts at $32,300 for the LE with front-wheel drive. Both prices exclude the delivery, processing and handling fee.

Hybrid models are due at U.S. dealers later this year. Plug-in hybrids are expected to start arriving in early 2027.

What changes for plug-in hybrid buyers

NACS is the plug design Tesla introduced, which much of the industry has since adopted in North America. With it, RAV4 plug-in owners can use DC fast chargers (often called Level 3) in addition to home and public AC charging. Toyota also moved the charging port to the driver’s side on all plug-in grades and made an 11-kW onboard AC charger standard. That charger handles Level 1 charging from a household outlet and Level 2 charging from a wall unit or public post.

The plug-in system pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with electric motors and a high-capacity battery for 321 total system horsepower, and all-wheel drive is standard. Toyota’s estimated all-electric range is 52 miles for the SE, 50 for the XSE, 46 for the Woodland and 45 for the GR SPORT.

A taller Woodland and other updates

The Woodland grade gets new springs, shocks and jounce bumpers (the rubber stops that cushion the suspension at full compression). Ground clearance rises to 9.1 inches, compared with 8.1 inches on every other grade except the GR SPORT, which sits at 7.5 inches. Woodland models also get redesigned all-weather floor and cargo mats, all-terrain tires, roof rails with cross bars and a tow hitch receiver, with a choice of hybrid or plug-in power.

Other changes apply across the lineup:

  • Every grade gets a backup camera washer.
  • All-wheel-drive models switch from Trail mode to Multi-Terrain Select, with Rock & Dirt and Mud & Sand settings. Snow mode moves to the drive mode switch alongside Normal, Eco, Sport and Custom.
  • The free trial of Toyota’s Remote Connect app service grows from 1 year to 5 years on all grades.

What it means for RAV4 shoppers

Buyers of the cheaper model get Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid system with the same size engine, rated at 222 net combined horsepower with front-wheel drive and 229 with all-wheel drive. Toyota estimates the front-wheel-drive LE, SE and XLE Premium at 46 mpg city, 40 highway and 43 combined.

Fuel economy drops on the more rugged and sporty versions. The hybrid Woodland is rated at 40 city, 35 highway and 38 combined, and the plug-in SE at 42, 39 and 41 when running on gasoline.

The standard equipment list on the base LE includes a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 10.5-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a dash cam and Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, the brand’s suite of driver assistance systems. A 12.9-inch screen with JBL audio is standard on the Limited and optional on the XSE.

When the 2027 models arrive

Toyota said the hybrid versions should begin reaching dealerships across the United States later this year, with plug-in hybrids following in early 2027. The 2027 model keeps the sixth-generation design and the TNGA-K platform it shares with other Toyota models.
