Lucid Teases Sub-$50,000 Cosmos SUV as Its Launch Slips to 2027
Lucid posted a teaser video of what looks like its sub-$50,000 Cosmos electric SUV. Range, charging claims, the 2027 delay and Q3 sales numbers.

Lucid has posted a new teaser video of what appears to be the Cosmos, the midsize electric SUV it plans to sell for under $50,000. Buyers who want one will still have to wait: the company has moved production to 2027, and its CEO has said the second half of that year is most likely.
The clip runs 1 minute 34 seconds and went up on X, according to Electrek. Lucid did not name the vehicle in the post. Its caption said the company looks forward to sharing the feeling “with even more people,” a line Electrek read as a hint at a cheaper model.
What the video shows
Two frames show the SUV at dusk. The tailgate spells out “LUCID” in red illuminated letters, with thin red light strips on each side and a spoiler running across the bottom of the rear window. At the front, an LED headlight made of a row of vertical segments sweeps across a red body panel.
Electrek reported that the rear matches the Cosmos design Lucid registered with the EU Intellectual Property Office in May. The light strips also match a camouflaged Cosmos prototype seen on Highway 101 in California last month.
Lucid’s claims for range and charging
Lucid first showed plans for the Cosmos and a second model, the Earth, at its first Investor Day in March. Both use a new midsize platform, and both are meant to start under $50,000. That is roughly half the price of the Gravity SUV, according to Electrek.
The company says the Cosmos will get about 300 miles of range from a 69 kWh battery pack. That figure rests on efficiency of up to 4.5 mi/kWh, or miles driven per kilowatt-hour of energy, which Lucid says beats its closest competitor by 10%. Lucid also claims the SUV can add 200 miles of range in 14 minutes of charging.
A new motor and gearbox assembly, which Lucid calls the Atlas drive unit, has 30% fewer parts than the Zeus unit in the Gravity and costs 37% less, the company says. None of these figures has been tested on a production car yet.
A launch date that already moved
Production was first planned for late 2026. In August, CEO Silvio Napoli pushed the Cosmos into 2027 and said the second half was “most likely.”
That timing puts it up against Rivian’s base R2, which has a $45,000 price and a similar schedule, Electrek noted. A Cosmos prototype was spotted testing beside a Tesla Model Y in Arizona in May.
What it means for Lucid and its buyers
Right now Lucid sells only higher-priced models. The company delivered 3,806 vehicles in the third quarter, down 7% from a year earlier, and built only 2,954 after it cut the second shift at its Arizona factory, according to Electrek.
Lucid has said its cash will last “well into 2027.” Electrek pointed out that this overlaps with the planned second-half 2027 launch, which leaves little margin if the SUV slips again. For shoppers, a final price, trim lineup and order date have not been announced.
What to watch next
Lucid reports third-quarter earnings on Monday. Investors and reservation holders will be looking for any update on the Cosmos schedule and on how long the company’s cash will last.
