GM Scraps Electric Corvette SUV and Two Other EV Corvettes: Report

GM dropped an electric Corvette SUV, a two-door EV and an electric sedan, GM Authority reports, citing weak EV results. The 2027 Corvette gets an LS6 V8.

General Motors has dropped plans for an electric Corvette SUV and two other battery-powered Corvette models, according to a report from GM Authority that cites sources close to the automaker. GM never officially confirmed that the electric Corvettes were in the works, and it has not confirmed the cancellation.

If the report is accurate, the Corvette name stays with the gas and hybrid cars GM sells today. The eighth-generation Corvette, which moved the engine from the front to behind the seats, is getting a new LS6 V8 for 2027.

Three electric Corvettes reported dropped

According to GM Authority, the canceled projects were:

  • An electric Corvette SUV that could have competed with the Porsche Cayenne.
  • A two-door electric sports car.
  • A four-door electric sedan with a fastback roofline, which was apparently also in development.

All three would have shared GM’s BEV Prime platform, the company’s underpinnings for battery-electric vehicles, GM Authority reported. Carscoops, which followed up on the report, described the plans as on hold and possibly scrapped for good.

Why GM may have changed course

The report gives no firm reason. It suggests that weak results from GM’s electric lineup are behind the change. Carscoops wrote that GM has been hurt by its decision to go all in on EVs at the expense of hybrids across much of its range. The Corvette is one of the few GM products sold with a hybrid powertrain.

Buyers of high-end performance SUVs have also been slow to accept a 100% electric approach. Lotus launched the Eletre as an EV, then added a hybrid version after weak sales. Porsche’s gas-powered Macan outsold the electric Macan until Porsche dropped the gas model, according to Carscoops.

What it means for Corvette buyers

Nothing changes in showrooms. The reported cancellations involve vehicles GM never announced, and the 2027 Corvette with its new LS6 V8 is still coming.

Whether a Corvette SUV of any kind gets built is still open. GM Authority’s report covers only the electric SUV planned for the new EV platform and does not address a gas or hybrid version. SUVs have paid off for other sports car makers. The Cayenne, which debuted in 2002, gave Porsche owners an option once their families outgrew the 911 or Boxster, and it is now the brand’s best-selling model. The Urus accounts for around 60 percent of Lamborghini’s output. McLaren, which held out against building an SUV for years, has confirmed it has a competitor in development.

What Carscoops expects

Carscoops wrote that it would be surprised if the Corvette SUV idea were dead entirely. It pointed to the Trump administration’s relaxed fuel economy standards, which leave more room for vehicles with big engines, and suggested some GM executives are likely pushing for a V8 Corvette SUV, possibly with hybrid power. That view is the outlet’s own reading. GM has not officially confirmed any Corvette SUV, electric or otherwise.
